High School Musical (Post #2)

Gosh! I don’t know what it is about this movie that’s got me hooked to it. I’ve just finished watching the DVD for like the 700th time and I never get tired of it. It’s gone to the point where I downloaded the whole soundtrack from vinden.nl. Right now I’m listening to all the tracks over and over again. It’s really cool and sorta addictive. I can’t get the songs out of my mind and they’re constantly ringing over and over again. The songs in order are:

1. Start of something new
2. Get’cha head in the game
3. What I’ve been looking for
4. What I’ve been looking for (reprise)
5. Stick to the status quo
6. When there was me and you
7. Bop to the top
8. Breaking free
9. We’re all in this together
10. I can’t take my eyes off of you

Right now, the song that’s playing is “When there was me and you”, a solo piece by Gabriella Montez (played by Vanessa Anne Hudgens). She has an amazing voice and has the potential to go farther than she could have imagined. I was checking out imdb and a user posted a comment saying how Disney has a gift of finding new talent who’ve got the stuff to make it big in Hollywood. Some notable names are Lindsay Lohan, Kirsten Dunst, and some other actresses (actors too).

The whole movie was directed by Kenny Ortega and he’s an amazing choreographer too. My cousin Kali said that Kenny was the choreographer for Dirty Dancing when he was younger. Now he’s a big director for Disney, currently he’s the director of TV series: “That’s just Raven” and “The Suite Life of Cody and Zack” not forgetting Hannah Montana. Interesting enough, the actors and actresses of High School Musical all do guest appearances in each other’s shows. For example, Zac Efron (who plays Troy Bolton), made a star appearance in Suite Life of Cody and Zack, where Ashley Tisdale (whose character in the movie is blonde snob: Sharpay Evans) is one of the main actresses.

All in all, I believe that this is one movie that will stick with me forever until of course I get to see the sequel when it comes out next year. Until then, it’s us when we’re all in this together. Lolz.

Job interview

hmm... i've got a job interview today at midday and i'm feeling quite nervous in a slow dramatic kinda way. my stomach hasn't got butterflies (yet) but its building to it. the interview is for this intern vacancy at a company called "words, images , ideas" and i'm not the only person aiming for it, there's like a few others, namely Una, Grace and Geraldine who are going along with me to the interview.

today is fasting day for the throne room production team and i'm praying for my interview today. fingers crossed, i don't muck it up like i did with the Village Six interview last year. that was a total disaster!! thank God i never got the job, it would have been unbearable for me to work there. I'm gonna sign off here, i'll write in tomorrow about what happened and stuff like that, more like it, i'll blog from home and post it in school...lolz.

High School Musical

I love this movie! i love it so much that i don't want to return the DVD to my cousin until i have a copy of my own. But until i get that done, check out the videos on YouTube:

No seriously, i can't get enuf of this movie. i've even downloaded the soundtracks from vinden.nl.

Here's how the storyline goes:

Troy and Gabriella, two complete strangers, both go to a New Year's Eve Party. They are chosen to sing "Start of Something New". Afterwards, they introduce themselves and exchange numbers, promising to call each other.

Gabriella's mother's company transfers to Albuquerque, not knowing that Troy actually attends her new school. Troy is also the star player of the basketball team, of which his father, Jack Bolton, is the coach.

During homeroom, Ms. Darvis, the theater teacher, announces the upcoming auditions for the winter musical. Troy sees Gabriella at the back and tries to call her. Her cellphone rings and leads to Sharpay, Ryan, Troy, Gabriella, Taylor and Chad getting detention.

After homeroom, Troy and Gabriella meet and look at the signup sheet for the auditions. Sharpay finds them and assumes that Gabriella wants to sign up. She and Ryan put an article about Gabriella's academic achievements into Taylor's locker. During detention, Taylor approaches Gabriella and invites her to join the school's scholastic decathlon team.

As a result of the detention both Troy and Chad miss their basketball practice, much to the annoyance of Coach Bolton. During a confrontation between the coach and Ms. Darvis it is made clear that neither of them has any real respect for the work that the other does. Troy eventually takes part in practice but he can't seem to stop thinking about Gabriella, which is reflected by the whole team singing "Get'cha Head in the Game".

On the day of the auditions, Chad tells Troy that there is a basketball practice during free period. However, Troy chooses to go to the auditions instead. He meets Gabriella backstage and both watch a series of bad auditions, followed by Sharpay and Ryan's rendition of "What I've Been Looking For". Gabriella suddenly decides to audition, however, Ms. Darvis tells her that she is too late.

After a confrontation with Sharpay, Kelsi, the composer of the musical, trips and drops her notes. Troy and Gabriella rush to help her and end up singing a slower and more correct (according to Kelsi) version of the song "What I've Been Looking For". Ms. Darvis watches them from behind a wall and decides to give them a chance, inviting then to perform at the callbacks. When Sharpay finds out, she is furious.

With the captain of the Wildcats daring to try something new, it seems many students are losing their inhibitions and revealing their true desires to their friends, much to the annoyance of Sharpay. In the cafeteria most of the school breaks out into song singing, "Stick to the Status Quo". Whilst Sharpay is having a stroll through the cafeteria, Gabriella trips and her lunch spills all over Sharpay's jacket. Sharpay informs Ms. Darvis that Troy and Gabriella are trying to destroy the musical. Ms. Darbus informs Coach Bolton and ends up having yet another argument with him.

Chad and Taylor decide that they need to do something and devise a plan. The basketball team tricks Troy into saying that Gabriella isn't important while she watches events through a Wi-Fi link. Gabriella is hurt and sings "When There Was Me and You", later telling Troy that she isn't going to do the auditions anymore.

After seeing how Troy and Gabriella no longer get along, Chad and Taylor decide to tell them the truth. However, Gabriella still refuses to forgive Troy, until he turns up at her balcony singing the harmony of "Start of Something New".

In order to secure their places in the musical, Sharpay and Ryan persuade Ms. Darvis to change the callbacks time to coincide with the championship game and the scholastic decathlon. When Kelsi finds out, she and the others are devastated, but the scholastics and the jocks work together to come up with a plan.

On the day itself, Taylor and Gabriella send a virus into the system to disrupt the basketball game, then boil a bad-smelling chemical to stall the decathlon. Troy and Gabriella then run to the theater.

Sharpay and Ryan finish performing "Bop to the Top". But when Troy and Gabriella show up after Ms. Darbus called their names, she tells them, again, that they are too late. People start streaming into the theater to support them, giving Ms. Darbus no choice but to let them perform "Breaking Free". In the end, Ms. Darbus gives the parts to Troy and Gabriella.

After winning both the scholastic decathlon and the basketball game, Gabriella runs up to Troy and they try to kiss but are interupted by Chad, who is trying to give the game ball to Troy but ends up giving the ball to Kelsi. Jason Cross helps her shoot a basket and then the entire school gathers in the gym to perform "We're All in This Together".

Damn, its really getting to me, like right now, i wanna go home and watch the DVD all over again. Help me someone!!

An article from Business Weekly Online

Habitat For Hustlers
Freewheeling banks and lenders are preying on owners of the affordable homes

The guiding principle of the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity, founded in 1976 to build affordable houses for underprivileged families, comes from the Old Testament: "If a brother living near you becomes poor, you must provide for himâ...do not make a profit on the goods you sell him." But that ethos doesn't carry over to the many banks, brokers, and mortgage servicing companies that deal with Habitat families and, increasingly, are profiting handsomely from the financially naive.

Consider it another consequence of the housing boom. Habitat families are able to buy their homes for much less than full market value. A decade of rising prices has made them wealthier--on paper. At the same time, many are strapped for cash and unsophisticated about credit. For freewheeling brokers and lenders eager for refinancing business, the combination couldn't be better. "Habitat borrowers have targets on their backs," says Michael Calhoun, president of the Durham (N.C.) Center for Responsible Lending.

Charles and Ann Williams of St. Paul, Minn., are prime examples. He's a janitor, she's a home child-care provider, and they have three children. Their annual income is $18,187, supplemented by Social Security benefits. In 1995 they built a Habitat house and took a $64,000 mortgage. Since all original mortgages in the Habitat program are interest-free, their monthly payment was just $396.

That changed last year. A flyer advertising an offer to refinance with New Century Financial Corp. in Irvine, Calif., looked tempting. Within three weeks the couple signed papers. The good news was that they were able to unlock $28,000 in equity, money they used to cover debts. But their new $81,000 loan carries an interest rate of 9% and payments of $872 a month, more than half their monthly income. And the loan's adjustable rate can jump to 16% in two years. New Century says it has policies to ensure borrowers know what they're getting into and that it is negotiating with the couple for a new loan on better terms. The Williamses declined comment.

Many other families are being bombarded with offers to refinance out of 0% loans. Jordan Ash, director of the Financial Justice Center at the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, an advocacy group, says lenders are targeting Habitat families with phone calls, mailings, and even personal visits. Habitat affiliates in Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio, say many clients are getting mail solicitations that look to be from Habitat but are not. "I probably get two phone calls a week," says Dawn Daniels-McNear of the Columbus affiliate.

LIMITED FOCUS
Famously championed by emissary Jimmy Carter, Habitat is a $145 million-a-year enterprise based in Americus, Ga., with about 2,300 affiliates in some 100 countries and all 50 states. It builds nearly 25,000 homes a year for people who earn 25% to 50% of their area's median income. Applicants contribute about 10 weeks of labor to build their home or others in the community, make a downpayment of $100, and commit to a monthly mortgage payment.

Habitat's focus is mainly on building. Most of the mortgage payments it collects go into a pool to fund more houses. But Habitat also sells scores of loans to banks and outsources to mortgage servicers, some of which impose draconian penalties if people fall behind. They "jam predatory costs and attorney's fees and interest at 18% into the debt," complains April Carrie Charney, a lawyer with Jacksonville Area Legal Aid Inc. in Jacksonville, Fla.

One of Charney's clients is Yolanda Ray Cotton, who bought a home in 2000. When she slipped on payments, the loan's servicer, EverBank Financial Corp., quickly raised fees and threatened foreclosure. Cotton refinanced with Option One Mortgage Corp., a unit of H&R Block Inc. specializing in loans to borrowers with poor credit. Now she's behind on that loan, has racked up $9,925.65 in penalties, and is fighting to stave off foreclosure, says Charney. Cotton declined to comment. Option One says it is investigating the loan and will offer remedies if appropriate.

Critics say Habitat, which is made up of autonomous affiliates, isn't set up to deal with homeowners' problems. In many cases, "Habitat makes the loan, and they're out of the picture," says Charney. Spokesman Duane Bates says Habitat is aware of the problems with predatory lenders and servicers but doesn't consider them widespread. He notes that foreclosures are rare, with the national rate under 2%. And he says Habitat offers education and training to help owners make better choices.

Habitat also says it's beefing up borrower protections. Some newer loans require homeowners give Habitat the right of first refusal to buy the house for the amount paid in. Others stipulate that owners can collect only a percentage of the profit from a sale or refinancing based on how long they've lived there; the rest goes back to Habitat.

Even so, refis still tempt families who don't realize how fast the fees and interest add up. "You can't get a better deal than 0%. There's absolutely no reason to refinance," says Chris Miller, senior vice-president for loan servicing at NovaStar Financial Inc. in Kansas City, Mo. The firm has launched a pilot program with Habitat to provide mortgage servicing, job counseling, and credit education for free. Miller says many customers come for advice about refinancing, unschooled in the basics and unaware that they currently pay no interest. He says his team dissuades only 35% of them from refinancing. "Lenders are taking advantage of them," Miller says. "It defeats the entire purpose of the program."

One Year Ago

THIS IS WHAT I WROTE YESTERDAY: SUNDAY 12TH NOVEMBER AT ABOUT 3 IN THE AFTERNOON.

Right now I’m sitting in my room and listening to Beyonce’s latest song: “Irreplaceable”. It’s about a woman whose boyfriend cheated on her and he actually told her that she could never find another man to replace him. So here she is telling him to get out of her house and she’s reminding him that it’s so easy for her to find another dude to love.

For me, the words mean something different altogether. Today is my late brother’s one year anniversary of death. He died today at about 2.57pm last year in the CWM hospital. The atmosphere in the house is one of solemn, quiet celebration. On one hand, we’re sad about his passing and really miss him but on the other, we’re happy that he’s in the one place where he always wanted to be – in Paradise worshipping at God’s feet. Me? I don’t know exactly what to feel.

I would say that Jese’s death was a pivotal moment in my life and also that in the lives of my parents and siblings. So much has happened in this one year and I know that there’s more to come. We’ve had people talk about us, practically bitching about us and might I add, a tad shameless too! But that never stopped mum and dad from moving forward in God’s grace. Something that my elder brothers’ said in their letters to mum and dad, in order for my big brother – Jone, to come back home, God needed to take Jese away.

Ever since Jese died, Jone’s returned to his family and he’s found love again in his high school sweetheart (Wati). It’s all a little corny but I believe that God meant for it to happen so my family could grow. Now we’re all so close, me to my big brother who I never knew for almost half my life, it’s like he never left to go to Sydney. Of course, now he’s back in Brisbane and I miss him like hell (Wati too I’m sure) and we all can’t wait for him to come back home for the holidays next January.

Last Friday at our youth meeting, we all shared a bit on how Jese became a role model for each of us. He was our Youth Leader last year and he was one of the best we’ve ever had. You can bet your hat that we fought a lot at home and in church but that was how we showed how much we loved each other. He would get angry with me for growing my hair too long he always wanted me to have my hair cut short. Oh how I miss our fights. Truly, I do!

This has been a weekend of reflections for me and everyone else in the house. It’s our prayer that God will keep us together through all the, pardon my French, SHIT we will face. I need to be honest, it’s not easy moving on from where my brother left off but God promised that he’d always be by my side and he’d never leave me alone.

Graffiti

Exam postponed

As of this very moment i am a very sad and angry journalist. Just 2 minutes into us sitting our paper, we were told to leave the Dome cause there was a BOMB THREAT. The police came round and asked everyone to wait outside in the carpark.

After 10 minutes of waiting outside, the security guards informed us (hello, i'm in a class of journalists - of course we'd be trying to get some news out of it) that there was a bomb and the police wanted the students to move further away because it was larger than they expected.

10 minutes after that announcement, the supervisor of exams came out and told everyone that today's exams were postponed till the 21st of this month.

Those of us students that came with bags had to wait another 10 minutes before we could grab our bags from the baggage booth.

So here i am a survivor of an actual bomb threat, angry that i have to wait another week (after semester ends!) to sit one paper.

That's my bit of news for today. Stay tuned for more updates on how USP students avoid sitting their papers. I'm Sailosi Toganivalu, good day.

Panasonic SA7 vs. Panasonic VS7

Panasonic VS7

SAY HELLO TO THE TWO PHONES I WANT. THEY'RE BOTH CUTE AND COOL AND I HAVE TO CHOOSE WHICH ONE I WANT. PERSONALLY, I'M LEANING TOWARD THE VS7 MORE THAN THE SA7. WHAT DO YOU THINK? THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO PHONES IS THAT YOU CAN CHANGE THE COVERS OF THE VS7.

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS

This is one movie with many contrasting themes. I was gripped by the scenes of war depicted; although graphic at most times, it was all in all a movie that challenged the conventions we hold dear about the Second World War. As a journalist in training I am challenged by the role of the media and how it sang to the tune that the U.S. government played.

The movie looks at the lives of three survivors of six Iwo Jima flag raisers. It all focuses on a photo that was taken at the moment that the men were raising a flag on a hill on Iwo Jima. Their names were Ira Hayes, John 'Doc' Bradley and Rene Gagnon (played Jesse Bradford of Bring it On fame). As they were called to tour the States to raise War bonds, they questioned their honor as heroes. The world famous photo was printed at a time when America’s public opinion swayed against the war effort. The government was desperate to raise enough funds to further the war.

In all honesty I do not agree with the way those men were flaunted as heroes of a war that they never got a chance to truly fight for. I do, however, applaud Clint Eastwood for undertaking this movie and also to Steven Spielberg for producing it; the graphics were amazing and at times breathtaking – seeing all those guns and canons firing on a mountain. Truly amazing. Major kudos goes to the script writers and actors for an amazing screen play.

LETTER FROM HOME

Date: 5-11-2006 (SUNDAY)
Time: 6.17pm
Place: My room
Note: ~ I wrote this on Sunday night so I’m writing at it from what I’m feeling at that time.

Right now, I’m sitting down listening to Point Of Grace singing “You will never walk alone”. It sorta sets the tone for my week as I get ready for my exams. I’ve got three assessments to do this week. First off, my final performance assessment scheduled at 3.30pm at the Music Centre. After that, I have to prepare myself for my History exam that’s on Tuesday at 9.00am in Khatriya Hall (I hope I got the spelling right). I need to be in school by 8 o’ clock so I can catch the bus that heads down that way. I need to be at the venue by half past eight.

My paper starts at nine and ends at a quarter past twelve. After that I have the rest of the week to prepare for my Journalism paper on Friday (9.00am) at the FMF Dome. Same thing applies here, but instead of catching the bus, I need to be at the Dome by quarter to nine (at the latest).

My last paper is on Monday (13th November) the following week, which is a total relief coz I’ve been stressing myself out the past two weeks over my Politics paper. I pulled out some past year papers from the online share network and I realise that some questions are regurgitated but I can’t be too complacent and think that I should just stuffy those past year papers coz my lecturer (Kylie) could easily put out new questions that were not in the previous years papers. She’s certainly capable of it and I won’t be surprised that she actually does.

I’ve had this week to go through the tutorial questions in the Course Guide. Kylie marked out on the Course Guide the possible questions that could come out in the exams. We need to memorise of course our Heads of State and Heads of Government for all 12 USP member states. We need to know how many MP’s sit in parliament and which member states have 1, 2 or multi-party systems. All this information gives me headaches and I’m sure it’ll be a headache for me to remember them all at the exam.

But putting that all aside, I’ve got some news concerning next weekend; it will be Jese’s one year and we need to do some important stuff to commemorate his life. The Youth from church are getting together on Friday night to do flower arrangements and on Saturday we’ll all go up to the cemetery and pay our respects to my brother Jess. Of course, it’ll be filled with much pain and sorrow when we think back to all those times we spent together in church and stuff.

I will of course pay tribute to him in my own way. Most probably it’ll be a few posts on his life and stuff about him here on my blog. Keep an eye out for it. I’ll also post my last letter to him, that’s if I can find it after all this time. If I can’t find it then I’ll post the eulogy I wrote for him for the War Cry.

That’s it for now, until my next post, be blessed and go in peace!

Touched by an Angel

This is a pic of Jessica's hand taken the day after she was born.

World Trade Centre (Movie)

I watched one of the most powerful films that has ever come out of Hollywood last night. World Trade Centre is just filled with emotions and all the other hormonal stuff that flows through us. I was practically getting goosebumps when I saw the live footage that the producers borrowed from people who filmed the planes crashing into the WTC. All the news releases in the movie were actual tapes from news agencies and tv networks.

The story focuses around the lives of two police officers and their families. John McLoughlin (Nicholas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña) were two officers affiliated with the New York Ports Authority Office. They never realised just how different their lives would be on that day, Tuesday the 11th of September.

As the movie unfolds, you are bombarded with emotion and scenes of pain and anguish. I actually felt like I was trapped in there. I cried most at a very touching scene where John's wife is comforting a black woman whose son is caught somewhere in the rubble. The woman could never forget her last words to her son as he left for work. She was angry with him and they had a fight before he left. At the hospital she regretted evreything she said and wished that she could only hold him in her arms again. It was a powerful scene especially when you have a black woman and a white lady hugging each other trying to give each other comfort for the pain they feel inside.

I would recommend that people watch this movie, it is powerful and it would serve a good reminder that people have the potential to make good out of any situation they face in life. Tomorrow will never be the same again.

Note about the following video:~ it's got some pics of the actual crashing on 9/11 but i can't say that i agree with the users choice of music. check it:

    Bullet to the brain

Hmmm.... interesting title, i'm sure it caught your eye. I certainly got my thoughts flowing when i saw that pic in my google image search.

well, just to explain what i've been up to, i had a meeting with my study group today and we've been trying to figure out what exactly we should look for in our exam (apparently our lecturer said that it's right in front of our noses) so instead of running around cross eyed i've been trying to get my notes and extras from our class shares that's not very sharing at the moment. it's like a bullet to the brain. (hence the title)

i've decided to give it a break and try something more fulfilling (blogging... yay!!!)

hmmm..... seems like that's all i can say for now, so, see you latas!
